Society Participates in Obra and National Convocation Summer Gatherings

News

July 18, 2024

This summer the Disciples of Christ Historical Society has prioritized participation in the gatherings hosted by Obra Hispaña, the National Convocation, and the upcoming North American Pacific/Asian Disciples Convocation, connecting Disciples with their histories across the wider church.

The Obra Hispaña biannual assembly gathering in Kansas City, Missouri, took place June 20-22 and centered around the theme “Generations: Disciple, Serve, and Celebrate.” The Historical Society shared about our history and also listened and learned about the histories of some of our Hispanic congregations. Among the many noteworthy events, Obra Hispaña re-elected Rev. Lori Tapia to be its National Pastor of Hispanic Ministries. The Historical Society celebrates this decision with Rev. Tapia and Obra.

Additionally, the Society attended the National Convocation biennial session, July 11-14, in Greensboro, North Carolina. The Society sponsored a workshop at the biennial session, welcoming author Dr. Edward J. Robinson as he presented “Author Talk: To Pave the Way for His People: A Life of Preston Taylor.” The talk drew on his recently published biography of Preston Taylor, which the Historical Society published earlier this year. In the talk, Robinson recounted the story of a brilliant, powerful, and flawed leader whose influence extended from Nashville to the national stage and continues even today. Taylor’s organizational and business skills led to the creation of associations that gave both identity and agency to Black Disciples at a time when repressive laws and horrific prejudices made such action extremely difficult.

The Journal of Discipliana recently published the Rev. Dr. Bill Lee’s review of the Preston Taylor biography in our online journal, which can be found on our website.

Both events enriched the partnerships and relationships that the Society values across the life of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). We look forward to participating and hope to connect with you at the North American Pacific/Asian Disciples biannual gathering later this month.
