Description

Disciples of Christ Historical Society’s 2023 Disciples History Trading Cards. Barton W. Stone cards for individual purchase. Barton Warren Stone was an important preacher during the Second Great Awakening of the early 19th century. He helped to organize and lead the Cane Ridge Revival in Kentucky in 1801, which attracted an estimated 20,000 people and was one of the most important early events in Disciples history. Stone was first ordained a Presbyterian minister, then was expelled from the church after the Cane Ridge Revival for his stated belief that faith is the sole prerequisite for salvation. His followers-first called “New Lights” and “Stoneites”-united with the followers of Alexander Campbell in the 1830s to form the Stone-Campbell movement.
