Senior Archivist Colleen McFarland Rademaker and Associate Archivist Erin Anderson spoke to over 100 archives professionals this month as part of a virtual panel about collecting pauses. Sponsored by the Society of American Archivists (SAA) Accessioning, Acquisitions, and Appraisal Section, the “Triple A Talk” aimed to provide archivists with guidance on administering deliberate pauses in collecting due to budgetary constraints, building renovations, shifts in institutional mission, and other challenging circumstances. Rademaker and Anderson discussed the rationale and logistics of the Historical Society’s 2025 congregational collecting pause, which afforded DCHS staff and trustees the opportunity to rethink and revise the Historical Society’s collection development policy. The comprehensiveness of the Historical Society’s previous collection development policies led to collecting beyond our means; our new policy focuses on six strategic collecting priorities: 1) Historically Underrepresented Disciples, 2) Change-Makers, Standard-Bearers, and Thought Leaders, 3) The Founding and Early Generations (to 1890), 4) Christian Unity, 5) The Formation and Development of Denominational Ministries and Organizations, and 6) Disciples’ Responses to the Present Moment. Rademaker and Anderson also touched on communications with stakeholders about the pause, preparations for resuming congregational collecting, and lessons learned. To foster candid exchanges between presenters and attendees, Triple A Talks are not recorded.
