Nestled in the picturesque hills of Bethany, West Virginia, the Disciples of Christ Historical Society offers a gateway into the history of the Stone-Campbell Movement, exploring its roots as a 19th-century North American restoration movement. This movement, founded in part by Thomas and Alexander Campbell, gave birth to several groups, including the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ, Christian Churches/Churches of Christ, and Churches of Christ.
DCHS is situated near several historic landmarks, including Alexander Campbell’s study and mansion which is currently undergoing a complete restoration, the Campbell cemetery, and the Old Meetinghouse, where the Campbells preached. Across the street and up the hill lies Bethany College, the oldest higher education institution in West Virginia and a cornerstone of the Restoration Movement. Founded in 1840 by Alexander Campbell, the college continues a program of education true to Campbell’s vision.
